  1. Cook the apples gently in butter and vanilla essence until slightly soft, place in a buttered ovenproof dish.
  2. Beat together the milk, cheese, eggs and sugar.
  3. Pour over the apples.
  4. Bake at 190 °C / 375 °F / gas 5 for 25 minutes.
  5. Serve hot.
