About Banana blossom

The word « banana » has its root in the Arabic « banan », that means « finger ». The flower of the banana plant is also known as banana blossom or banana heart. The family to whom banana belongs is called musaceae. A banana plant is a herb which is usually mistaken for a tree, just because of its size and structure, and it is cultivated for its fruit that has the same name. Bananas are grown in 130 countries from all over the world and are native to tropical south-eastern Asia. Banana leaves reach up to 3,5 m in length while the fruit averages 125 g, of which almost 75% is water and 25% dry matter content. It is known that bananas, as well as banana blossom, represent a valuabla source of potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. in most tropical countries, green bananas are used for cooking. People came to the conclusion that one green cooking banana has about the same nutritional and calorie content as one potato. The flower of the banana plant is used in Southeast Asian, Indian, and Bengali cooking either served raw with dips or cooked in soups and curries.
