Cooking 101: Steaming

  • 1 What is Steaming?
  • 2 How do you steam?
  • 3 Tips & Tricks
  • 4 Steaming Recipes

Steaming is a method of cooking using steam. Steaming is considered a healthy cooking technique and capable of cooking almost all kinds of food.

Steaming works by boiling water continuously, causing it to vaporize into steam; the steam then carries heat to the nearby food, thus cooking the food. The food is kept separate from the boiling water but has direct contact with the steam, resulting in a moist texture to the food.

  1. Get a collander or a steamer and a large pot or wok
  2. Fit the collander over the pot and make sure it fits in without touching the base of the pot
  3. Fill the pot with a few inches of water, making sure not to have the water touch the base of the collander

Cooking 101: Seeds

A seed is an embryonic plant itself and the origin of nutrition. Seeds come in all different sizes, shapes and colors.

Many seeds are edible and the majority of human calories come from seeds, especially from legumes and nuts. Nuts are technically seeds, but most of us don’t think of them as one and the same. For our purposes, nuts are the larger, denser edible seeds; seeds are the smaller ones that require considerably more work to actually eat in their natural state.

Seeds also provide most cooking oils, many beverages and spices and some important food additives.

There are dozens of types of seeds, but here are some of the most popular edible seeds.

Cooking 101: Chocolate

Chocolate is a processed, typically sweetened food produced from the seed of the tropical Theobroma cacao tree. The seeds of the cacao tree have an intense bitter taste, and must be fermented to develop the flavor.

After fermentation, the beans are dried, then cleaned, and then roasted, and the shell is removed to produce cacao nibs. The nibs are then ground to cocoa mass, pure chocolate in rough form. Because this cocoa mass usually is liquefied then molded with or without other ingredients, it is called chocolate liquor.

The liquor also may be processed into two components: cocoa solids and cocoa butter. Unsweetened baking chocolate (bitter chocolate) contains primarily cocoa solids and cocoa butter in varying proportions.

Much of the choco…

Cooking 101: Braising

  • 1 What is braising?
  • 2 How do you braise?
  • 3 Cuts of Meat to Choose
  • 4 Tips & Tricks
  • 5 Recipes

Braising is a combination cooking method that uses moist and dry heat. Typically, the food is first seared at a high temperature and then finished in a covered pot with a variable amount of liquid, resulting in a particular flavor. Braising allows for really tender meat that falls apart easily. Most people associate pot roasts with braising.

Braising is a great way to cook inexpensive, tough, and fatty cuts of meat.

  1. Season the cut of meat with salt and pepper
  2. Heat the Dutch oven or heavy pan and add a few tablespoons of butter or olive oil.
  3. Brown the meat or vegetables on all sides on medium-high heat
  4. Deglaze the pan by pouring broth, stock, wine or juice (only en…

Cooking 101: Spices

A spice is a dried seed, fruit, root, bark, or vegetable substance primarily used for flavoring, coloring or preserving food. A spice is often used to enhance a recipe or to make something bland more flavorful.

Even though herbs are also used for flavoring or garnish, they are very different from spices. An herb is a part of a leafy green plant, such as Rosemary or Basil.

There are dozens of spices, but here are twelve of the most commonly used household spices.
