Cocktails are usually a mixture of more substances that are generally liquid. The substances can be alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages such as ice, liqueur, fruit, sauce, honey milk or cream and even spices. Ts kind of beverage became popular in the United States during the Prohibition period. The bartenders were mixing the alcohol that came from bootleggers with other types of alcohol or even with non-alcoholic drinks. Gin, whiskey and rum were till a few decades a go the most popular beverages that were used in cocktails. Also, vodka started to gain a little field but not too much though. After the 1970’s, however, vodka became more and more popular until it became the most common alcoholic beverage world wide and thus it started to be the most predominant base for cocktails. The vodka is even starting to become a replacement for other base substances in mixed drinks. For example, the gimlet, which is a cocktail traditionally made with gin, is now usually served with vodka instead. The first time the word “cocktail” was used in a printed publication was in May 13th 1806, in the Balance and Columbian Repository, but its use here is quite pejorative. In 1862, there came out on the market the first bartender’s guide and this included all sorts of cocktail recipes. In this guide is stated that the thing that makes the difference between cocktails and other drinks is the use of a bitter ingredient in the former. This ingredient, however, is not very popular in the modern cocktails. A 2004 statistics says that the most popular modern cocktails are: Martini, Margarita, Gin&Tonic, Cosmopolitan, Bloody Mary, Mojito, Mai Tai, Hurricane, Irish Coffee, Long Island Ice Tea.
