Vegetarians in the Czech Republic are very few, and they may find it difficult to eat well unless they cook for themselves. In many restaurants, a vegetarian meal represents a meal that doesn’t have beef or pork, but may still have types of ham or may be made with lard. So the best way is to choose a vegetable stew or a mixed vegetable salad as part of a vegetarian meal. Soups represent a great choice as well, there being a large variety of polévka, mainly cabbage and potato soups. Kolače, the national pastry can be prepared without any animal fat, and may have fruit filing, or jams. Side dishes are great to be served as they are, representing a possible vegetarian meal. Mashed or fried potatoes, rice or steamed vegetables are nutritional and consist as a basis of a vegetarian meal.
