Some of the most popular snacks and appetizers are the plantain chips or plantain fries, which are easily and quickly made, using green plantains, vegetable oil for frying and salt – the chips are cut into paper-thin rounds, but the regular fries are cut in thicker pieces. Sorrel is a special liquid which is used in many Guyanese salads and it is prepared from a vegetable leaf. Yams are also consumed as appetizers, especially the yam and spinach croquettes, which also contain dried bread crumbs. There are some meat appetizers, like the baked fish fillets supreme or the baked fish soufflé, which consist of various sorts of fish, milk, flour, lime juice and tomatoes paste.
