Back in the 60s and 70s, a restaurant chain called King’s Food Host served these delicious crunchy-gooey sandwiches. The restaurants are no longer around, but these are just as good, if not better! Perfect comfort food on a cold day with a hot bowl of tomato soup. - Brenda Schosser, Brighton, CO
Ingredients[]
- 6 slices white bread
- 3 T. mayonnaise
- 6 slices American cheese
- 1 egg
- 1/2 c. milk
- 3/4 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 t. salt
- 1 c. corn flake cereal, crushed
- oil for deep frying
Directions[]
- Spread bread slices with mayonnaise on one side.
- Add 2 slices cheese to each of 3 slices; close sandwiches with remaining bread.
- Cut sandwiches into triangles; trim off crusts, if desired.
- Whisk together egg, milk, flour and salt in a shallow dish; place crushed cereal in a separate dish.
- Dip each triangle into egg mixture; coat with cereal.
- Add one inch oil to a skillet over medium-high heat; heat to 375 degrees.
- Add triangles; deep-fry until golden on both sides.
- Place on paper towels to drain.
Yield: Serves 3
