  1. Mix sugar, cherries, vinegar, water, and black pepper in a medium saucepan.
  2. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Continue to cook at a slow boil for about 45 minutes or until thick.
  3. Remove from heat. Add ketchup (or tomato sauce), mustard, and hot sauce; mix really well.
  4. Serve as a marinade for meat or poultry. Reserve the homemade, fruit-based barbecue sauce in the freezer or refrigerator but spoon, funnel, or scoop this into a glass or plastic jar.
