Cake mix and canned frosting turn into some of the best cupcakes around once you add the surprise cream cheese-and-chocolate chip filling. Decorator sprinkles create festive magic on top. We really liked these chocolate cupcakes plain, too.

  1. Beat cream cheese at medium speed with an electric mixer until smooth; add sugar, beating well.
  2. Add egg, beating just until blended.
  3. Stir in chocolate morsels.
  4. Prepare cake mix according to package directions.
  5. Place baking cups in muffin pans.
  6. Spoon batter into cups, filling two-thirds full.
  7. Spoon a scant tablespoonful cream cheese mixture in center of each cupcake.
  8. Bake at 350° for 19 to 21 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted off center comes out clean.
  9. Cool in pans on wire racks 5 minutes.
  10. Remove from pans, and cool completely on wire racks.
  11. Frost cupcakes with desired flavor frosting.
  12. Or swirl frostings together with a knife or thin metal spatula, if desired.
  13. Top with decorator sprinkles, if desired.

Yield: 2 1/2 dozen
