  1. Melt butter and sauté onion and garlic until clear over medium heat.
  2. Add ham, sauté stirring frequently.
  3. Add flour and stir until well blended.
  4. Add chicken broth and stir over heat until thickened and bubbly.
  5. Add potatoes and bring to a simmer.
  6. Reduce heat to medium low, cover and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes.
  7. Add pepper to taste, half and half and cheese.
  8. Stir until cheese is melted.
