Think traditional Southern cooking is always fattening? Here's a recipe for country fried steak with all of the flavor and very little fat. Good fixins!

  • Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 25 minutes
  • Makes 3 to 5 servings

  1. Flatten steaks to ¼-inch thickness using a meat mallet or rolling pin
  2. Sprinkle evenly with ¼ teaspoon Tony's
  3. 1/4 tsp red pepper
  4. Combine crushed crackers, ¾ cup flour, and red pepper
  5. Stir together egg substitute and ½ cup milk
  6. Dip steaks into egg mixture; dredge in cracker mixture, pressing lightly into cracker mixture
  7. Cook steaks in hot oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat 5 to 7 minutes on each side or until golden brown
  8. Remove steaks from skillet; drain on paper towels and keep warm
  9. Whisk together remaining 1½ cups milk, remaining 2 tablespoons flour, and remaining Tony's
  10. Pour mixture into reserved drippings in skillet; cook over medium- high heat, whisking constantly, 10 to 12 minutes or until thickened
  11. Serve gravy over steaks
  12. Sprinkle with parsley, if desired
  13. Cooking tip: if you like a thicker gravy add more flour or reduce the amount of milk
  14. Serve with side of favorite vegetables and bread
