Literally, a red fruit jelly, made by cooking such fruits as black and red currants, raspberries, or with strawberries or cherries, then served with cream, vanilla sauce, and milk. "Rhababergrütze" (rhubarb jelly) and "Grüne grütze" (gooseberry fruit jelly) are variations of the "Rote grütze".
