Two types of potato, nutty Gruyère cheese, and salty ham give this entrée unusual appeal.

  1. Sauté onion in oil over medium-high heat 5 minutes
  2. Add garlic; cook 30 seconds.
  3. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Place potatoes in a large bowl.
  5. Combine flour, salt, and pepper; sprinkle over potatoes, tossing to coat.
  6. Arrange half of potato mixture in a greased 13" x 9" baking dish or 3-quart gratin dish.
  7. Top with onion, ham, and 1 cup cheese.
  8. Top with remaining potato mixture.
  9. Pour cream over potato mixture.
  10. Dot with butter, and cover with aluminum foil.
  11. Bake at 400° for 50 minutes.
  12. Uncover, top with remaining 1 cup cheese, and bake 20 more minutes or until potatoes are tender and cheese is browned.
  13. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

Yield: 6 to 8 servings
